GEO vs AEO vs SEO: The New Optimization Alphabet
For twenty years there was one game: search engine optimization, SEO, the craft of ranking on a results page so people click through to your site. Then answer boxes started appearing above the links, and then AI assistants started answering without showing links at all. Two new acronyms arrived to describe the new game. They overlap, they are often used loosely, and they describe genuinely different things. Here is what each one means and how they fit together.
SEO: be found on a results page
Search engine optimization is about ranking. A person types a query, the engine returns a list of pages, and SEO is everything you do to appear high on that list: relevant content, clean technical structure, fast pages, links from other sites, and matching the words people actually search for. The reward is a click. The page is the destination.
SEO is not going away. Search engines still send enormous traffic, and the signals that make a page rank, clarity, authority, structure, are the same signals the newer systems read. But the click is no longer the only outcome.
AEO: be the answer
Answer engine optimization is about being the content an engine uses to answer a question directly, without the person clicking anywhere. The featured snippet at the top of a results page is the original answer box. Voice assistants reading out one result are answer engines. The AI summary that now sits above many search results is an answer engine.
AEO shifts the target from "rank for this phrase" to "be the clearest, most direct answer to this question". It rewards pages that state the answer plainly, usually near the top, in a form the engine can lift out: a short definition, a list of steps, a table, a question followed immediately by its answer. Structured data marking up questions and answers helps the engine find and trust them.
GEO: be cited by generative AI
Generative engine optimization is about the systems that write their answers rather than extracting them: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and the AI modes inside search. These models synthesise an answer from many sources and often cite a few. GEO is the practice of making your content something those systems draw on and name.
Because the engine is generating, not matching, the signals change. Being quotable matters: specific facts, numbers, clear claims. Being consistent matters: the same facts about you across every place the model might have read. Being structured matters even more, because a model building an answer from fragments prefers fragments that are unambiguous. And being an entity matters: a business the model recognises as a distinct thing, with a stable identity and connected facts, is far easier to recommend than a name it half remembers.
How they relate
Think of them as layers rather than rivals. SEO gets your page seen and crawled, which is the precondition for everything else. AEO makes the answer on that page easy to lift out. GEO makes your facts easy for a model to understand, trust and attribute. A page that does all three states the answer clearly, marks it up, keeps it consistent with every other mention of you, and sits on a site that engines already respect.
The practical overlap is large. Clear headings, direct answers, structured data, consistent facts and a strong entity identity serve all three. The main difference is what you measure: rankings and clicks for SEO, answer appearances for AEO, citations and mentions in AI answers for GEO.
What to actually do
Write each important fact as a direct answer to the question someone would ask. Mark up those answers with structured data. Make sure your name, address, hours and offerings are identical everywhere. Give your business a clear identity that machines can link to. Keep the technical basics that SEO always demanded. None of this is new work. It is the same work, done with a machine reader in mind.
The takeaway
SEO wins the click, AEO wins the answer box, GEO wins the citation. They reward the same underlying habits, with the emphasis shifting from keywords toward clear, structured, consistent facts that a machine can lift, trust and attribute.
