How to Become Visible in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini
A growing share of the questions that used to go to a search box now go to an AI assistant. People ask ChatGPT for hotel recommendations, Perplexity for the best restaurant near a landmark, Gemini for whether a place suits a family. These systems answer in prose, name a handful of businesses, and sometimes cite their sources. Being one of the names is the new visibility. Here is how these assistants find what they recommend, and what makes a business easy for them to choose.
Three different engines, one set of habits
The three work differently under the surface. ChatGPT relies heavily on what its model learned in training, supplemented by live web search when a question needs current information. Perplexity is search first: it retrieves pages for every query and writes its answer from them, with citations. Gemini blends Google's index and knowledge graph with its model. The differences matter less than the overlap. All three need to find you, understand you, trust you and be able to state facts about you without hedging.
Be present where the models read
Training data and live retrieval both draw on the open web. The places that get read most are your own site, major directories and booking platforms, review sites, and public knowledge bases such as Wikidata. Your business should exist in all of them with the same name, the same address, the same description and the same facts. A model that sees one consistent entity across many sources treats it as real and well defined. A model that sees three slightly different versions treats it as uncertain.
Make your pages answer questions
Assistants retrieve passages, not pages. The passage that gets used is the one that answers the question directly. A page that says "Rooftop pool, open 07:00 to 21:00, children welcome until 18:00" gets used for a question about kids and the pool. A page that evokes the pool in a paragraph about sunsets does not. Write each fact as something a person would ask, followed by a plain answer. FAQ pages, facts tables and clearly headed sections all do this.
Give the machines the structured layer
Every one of these systems reads structured data when it is there. Marking up your business, outlets, hours, policies and FAQ entries with schema.org vocabulary means the assistant reads your facts rather than inferring them. It also lets you declare your identity: this page is this business, and here are its profiles elsewhere. That declaration is how a model links the mention on your site to the mentions everywhere else and builds confidence.
Be an entity, not a phrase
Models recommend things they recognise as distinct entities: a specific hotel with a specific identity and a connected set of facts. A business whose name is also a common word, or whose name varies across listings, or which has no presence in the knowledge bases the models consult, is hard to pin down and easy to leave out. Clear naming, a canonical page, consistent profiles and a knowledge base entry where appropriate turn a phrase into an entity.
Earn corroboration
Assistants weigh facts by how many independent sources agree. Reviews that mention your specific features, articles that describe you accurately, directory listings that match your site, all corroborate. None of this is gaming. It is the ordinary result of being accurately described in many places, and it is what lets a model say "this hotel has a rooftop pool" instead of "this hotel may have a pool".
Make yourself operable
The next step after being recommended is being booked. Perplexity and ChatGPT already route some tasks to tools and partner services. Assistants that can check your availability and complete a reservation will favour you for the person who wants to act now. Exposing live facts and actions through a structured endpoint, including an MCP server, is how you move from mentioned to used.
What not to do
Do not stuff pages with phrases aimed at models. Do not publish claims the rest of the web contradicts. Do not hide your facts in images, flipbooks or PDFs that a crawler reads poorly or not at all. Do not let your listings drift out of sync. Each of these makes you harder to understand, and the assistant will choose whoever is easier.
The takeaway
Visibility in AI assistants comes from being consistently present, plainly factual, structurally marked up, recognisable as an entity, corroborated by others, and reachable by tools. The same clarity that helps a person understand you is what lets a model recommend you.
